Terms of Service

These terms are the agreement between you and PaintedApp, LLC, which runs Painted Letters. Buying from us, or using the site, means you accept them. If you do not, please do not order.

What you are buying

A Painted Letters print is the handwriting from a photograph you bring, with the paper lifted away in your browser by an adaptive threshold, printed in one ink on one ground, on the paper or canvas you choose, or sent to you as a Digital File. Or it is words you type, written out in your browser in a script you choose: a font drawn from calligraphy, not anyone's handwriting. A script for another language can translate your words first; that translation is made by a machine, so have someone who reads the language check it before you order, because the print sets the words exactly as the preview shows them. Or it is a conversation, read by a machine from screenshots you bring and written out in a script the same way: read it through before you order, since the print sets what the studio shows, not what the screenshots said. Bring only a conversation you are free to share.

The print is the strokes the threshold kept. We do not redraw, restore or add to the hand, and nothing on the print is made by an image generator. Strokes the studio marked in red were left out at the threshold you chose and are not printed.

You must be 18 or older, or the age of majority where you live, to order.

The note is yours to print

By ordering you confirm that you may reproduce the handwriting for your own personal use: it is your own hand, a family member's, a note written to you, or one in the public domain. We use the mask only to draw, print and deliver your order, and we claim no rights in it.

A print is a keepsake, not a copy of a document. It is not a certified copy, and it must not be used as a signature, for identification, or to pass as the original.

Made to order

Every print is drawn and printed for your note alone. Nothing is held in stock and nothing can be resold, so please check the preview, the red marks, the size and the line beneath before you pay. Your order goes to the print lab after payment, so a print cannot be cancelled or returned once it is under way, except where the fault is ours or the law says otherwise. The shipping and returns page sets out what we do when something goes wrong.

If something arrives wrong

If your print arrives damaged, defective, or not what the studio showed, write to us within 30 days of delivery with a photograph and we will remake it or refund you. That is our own promise, and it sits on top of your statutory rights, which nothing here reduces.

Your licence

Your purchase licenses the print for personal use: hang it, give it, photograph it. It does not transfer copyright in our layouts or software, and it does not license commercial use, resale or merchandise. If you would like a commercial arrangement, write to us and ask.

The Digital File

A Digital File is the print-ready JPEG of the plate, sent as a download link on the page after you pay and by email, instead of being printed. Nothing is shipped. Your purchase licenses the file for personal use: print it as often as you like for yourself, frame it, and give the prints you make as gifts. It does not license resale, commercial use or merchandise, or passing the file on for other people to print. If the file is faulty or is not what the studio showed, write to us within 30 days and we will fix it or refund you.

Gift codes

A gift code pays for one print or one Digital File on this site, up to the amount it was bought for. It covers the item, not the shipping, which is paid at checkout. It works once: if the item costs less than the code, the difference does not carry over. Codes do not expire and have no cash value, and they work only here, not in any other shop.

The code is emailed to the person who bought it, to pass on. Anyone who has the code can use it, so keep it as you would a gift card; we cannot replace a code someone else has already used.

Fair use of the site

Please do not scrape the site, resell access to it, or use it to reproduce a signature or a document for anything but keeping it, or anything unlawful. We may decline or refund any order at our discretion.

The honest limits

The print comes from your photograph, so it can be no better than the photograph. Pencil, faded ink and a pen running dry can fall under the threshold; the studio marks those strokes in red before you pay, and they are not printed. Screens and paper differ, and an ink on paper will not match a screen exactly.

The site and everything on it are provided as they are, without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent the law allows, our total liability for any claim arising out of an order or these terms will not exceed what you paid for the order it concerns, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Prices and payment

Prices are shown before you pay, and Stripe's checkout page shows the full total, including any shipping, before you confirm. Stripe charges your card; we never see or store your card details. Prodigi or Printful prints and ships each print, whichever gets it to you for less, and shipping is charged at what that lab charges to send it, with nothing added. Import duties, where they apply, are the recipient's responsibility.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Oregon, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and disputes will be heard there, except where consumer-protection law where you live gives you the right to bring proceedings in your own country. Before filing anything, please write to us so we can try to settle it directly.

Changes

We may update these terms. The date at the top always says when. Orders are governed by the terms in force when you placed them.
